The Operational Advisory and Data Joint team leader key responsibilities are to lead the team advising on the legal issues that arise in the NCA’s investigative and intelligence work. The role will involve working on legal issues relating to the covert collection of intelligence, extradition and international cooperation and all aspects of the Crime and Courts Act 2013. You will be working in partnership with operational and policy colleagues to think creatively and help manage legal risk in cases that are often novel, complex and challenging, while also focussing on building capability within the team and supporting more junior lawyers as they develop their careers.
The Litigation team leader role will revolve around leading a team that is responsible for defending the NCA against all legal claims brought against it – including defending private and public law litigation as well as Inquest and Inquiry work. Typical casework for the lawyers within the team includes a mix of Judicial Review, Personal Injury claims and other types of claims for damages, lawyers currently also support the NCA’s handling of two major Public Inquiries (Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse and Undercover Policing Inquiry) which are managed by the team. The team is responsible for handling high profile and complex casework, regularly briefing the Command Team of the Agency, working in partnership with operational colleagues. Also, a focus on building capability within the team and supporting more junior lawyers as they develop their careers will be required.
The ideal candidate must be a solicitor or barrister qualified to practise in England and Wales with proven ability to build credible relationships with senior leaders internally and externally by giving authoritative, risk-based legal advice that enables the Agency to effectively manage its legal risk and achieve its strategic mission. Candidates will also evidence the ability to pick up new areas of law as required to support the Agency in meeting its objectives, including proven experience in advising on novel or complex cases with national impact.
