The Head of Cabinet Office and Civil Service

Internal Communications has responsibility for communicating how the Civil Service is changing to over 450,000 civil servants across the UK as well as promoting the purpose and objectives of the Cabinet Office to its staff in an engaging and innovative way.

Managing an immediate team of nine (but also coordinating work with 20 other internal comms heads across Whitehall) the postholder will oversee an innovative programme of cutting-edge communications across digital and face-to-face channels.

Working closely with the Chief Executive, Ministers and Cabinet Secretary, the role has responsibility for communications and campaigns across a range of Cabinet Office and Civil Service channels including the intranet, all staff events, SCS leadership events, Civil Service Live, Civil Service Quarterly, email, newsletters and social media.

The successful candidate will have significant prior experience in the development and implementation of high quality, effective internal communications and engagement strategy and plans.

Understanding the big picture and having a finger on the pulse of the organisation will be crucial for the postholder, to enable them to judge the right style and tone in both design and delivery of messages and in advising and influencing senior leaders in the best course of action to take.

Key responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for: 

• Direct line management and leadership of the team
• Creation and delivery of internal communications strategies to meet Civil Service-wide and departmental objectives
• Maintaining close relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
• Working collaboratively with Heads of Internal Communications across Whitehall.
