Director of Knowledge

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government. The department has more than 14 client-facing advisory teams who provide legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, draft secondary legislation and work with Parliamentary Counsel on primary legislation. Its cross-cutting expert service groups for Litigation, Employment and Commercial Law provide specialist legal services to a wide range of government departments and public bodies.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the GLD in a new senior leadership role focused on ensuring its lawyers have the right skills, tools, support and environment to provide the best and most cost-effective legal services to Government. This new role demonstrates the commitment of GLD’s Board to build on the success they have already achieved in bringing together legal teams from across government by professionalising the structures that are in place to support the delivery of legal services.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving forward a number of initiatives and projects to encourage and support the development of a much deeper and more professional culture of legal knowledge creation and sharing across GLD, and to develop flexible and innovative approaches to support the Department in meeting our clients’ legal needs.

Skills & Attributes

• Strong people leadership skills, with the ability to attract, motivate, develop and lead staff at all levels within a knowledge based function to the highest standard

• Substantial practical experience of providing forward-thinking knowledge management services to a large complex business, preferably a legal business, with demonstrable commercial awareness, preferably with experience of dealing with suppliers

• The ability to swiftly develop a sound understanding of the legal landscape government operates in.

• A good understanding of the use of technology and its potential to impact the delivery of legal services.

• An ability to motivate and persuade lawyers to contribute to knowledge and learning.
