Deputy Director, Strategic Communications and Planning

We have an exciting, challenging new role for a Deputy Director; Strategic Communications & Planning, who will lead a communication unit to coordinate the cross-government communications to prepare the UK for EU Exit.

As a Deputy Director at DEXEU, you will need to lead, inspire, encourage and promote the team and its activities. You will be responsible for agreeing the remit and the working relationship for your team both within Whitehall and internally across DExEU. Your team will be central to domestic EU exit communications across government through providing critical oversight of multi-disciplinary campaigns and engagement activity.

You will build strong relationships across Whitehall including with No 10 and the Cabinet Office Europe Unit to plan media, campaigns and stakeholder engagement. You will also work within DExEU and with other government departments to drive a central function that coordinates individual communications activity and brings forward plans to deliver it. You will also be responsible for representing the team at, and reporting to, Ministerial Boards and to other senior stakeholders, both in and outside of Government.

This role adds significant value across government through strategic leadership of project delivery, collaborating and influencing across divisions and by providing expert knowledge and skills to ensure we have a professional, skilled project delivery approach to our communications.

● Be senior communications leaders, with significant experience successfully leading high profile, cross-disciplinary communications activity.

● Influence and engage departments to drive coordinated communications activity and campaigns.

● Be adept at establishing and delivering complex projects, both strategic planning and getting into the detail to make things happen when needed.

● Experienced in project management working to challenging deadlines and managing competing priorities within a complex and changing environment.

● Be able to work collaboratively within and across teams, and departments and demonstrate how you can build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders across government.

● Have the gravitas and awareness of the political context to quickly build strong working relationship across a range of senior stakeholders.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following essential and desirable criteria:

Essential
● Project management experience
● Experience leading large scale national or international campaigns
● Strong negotiation and influencing skills
● Strong experience in leading and establishing teams to deliver on complex projects/campaigns
● Experience analysing evidence to assess effectiveness of projects and/or
campaigns
● Experience delivering at pace, and supporting teams to meet challenging and competing deadlines for a sustained period of time
● Experience working in or close to a large communications team

Desirable
● Understanding of EU exit issues
● Establishing new teams and/or processes
