Deputy Director: Business Engagement

The Deputy Director, Business Engagement is a new senior leadership role within the Business Investment Directorate. The key objective of the role is to provide a joined up and professional interface with business, working collaboratively across Whitehall.

You will be responsible for:

• Providing leadership across the Business Investment Directorate, as part of a strong Senior Management Team. Helping to shape a vision for the Directorate and inspiring others to help deliver it.

• Leading the Directorate’s work on business engagement. Developing a vision and building a new team (around 10 people) focused on business engagement.

• Developing the business engagement function, focusing on businesses with a significant UK presence across the economy investing in the UK:

1. Coordinating, targeting and delivering engagement activities and support across Government. Developing account management roles and responsibilities and monitoring implementation.

2. Articulating and developing support for business, including supporting policy priorities (eg Industrial Strategy), identifying and sharing cross-cutting policy themes and providing appropriate briefing

3. Collecting and disseminating business intelligence, including improved research and analysis on companies and sectors

• Working collaboratively across the Directorate, the Department (particularly those focused on EU Exit and industrial strategy), and across Whitehall (sector leads in business facing departments and, in particular, the Department for International Trade) on business engagement

• Developing best practice for business engagement, facilitating information and best practice sharing across Government and building on experience from the private sector. Where possible leveraging digital ways of working to maximise impact while reducing bureaucracy.

• Deepening business awareness and expertise across BEIS, working with the transformation team and others to support the ambition for BEIS to be the 'go-to' department for business

Person specification

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

• Effective strategic leadership, with a proven track record of shaping a strategic vision and setting up, managing and motivating a team to deliver against clear objectives.
• Strong team building skills, with the ability to inspire and empower the team as it expands.
• Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to work collaboratively and build rapport across organisational boundaries both inside and outside government.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the credibility and gravitas to build effective relationships with diverse senior stakeholders at board level and the ability to convey complex information to a range of audiences.
• A sound understanding of how commercial decisions are made and the ability to integrate advice from a range of professionals.

Experience of working in business, as well as in government, would be beneficial.
